Actress Rita Farr was exposed to strange jungle gases that gave her the ability to change the proportions of her body at will. Feeling like a freak, Rita went into hiding until The Chief contacted her and convinced her to help humanity as a member of the Doom Patrol.

Fellow crime-fighter Mento fell in love with Rita, and the two were married. Elasti-Girl was there when the original Doom Patrol chose to sacrifice themselves in a horrible bomb blast to save a small village. Rita was the only member not to survive.
