When the original Captain Marvel died, his lover Elysius had a son genetically-engineered using samples from Mar-Vell. The son, Genis, was artificially but not emotionally aged, and inherited the same powers as his father. Genis tried hard to live up to the ideals of a father he never knew and cope with the tremendous power at his disposal. Sometimes he succeeded, but a lot of the time he failed tremendously.
Genis went with several different costumes during his career. At top is his second costume, a red number that was inspired by his father's costume. Below is his fourth costume, which is the same costume in white. He wore this to help convince people he was good again, after going mad and destroying the universe.
