Things that happened before Scott "Slim" Summers joined the first class of X-Men:

• He went flying with his parents and brother Alex. When their plane was attacked by an alien Shi'ar starship, his mother shoved Scott and Alex out of the plane with the only parachute. Scott suffered a head injury when they landed, preventing him from ever controlling his mutant power blasts.

• He was separated from his brother Alex and ended up in an orphanage controlled by his future enemy Mister Sinister.

• He ended up in the foster care of the mutant criminal Jack O'Diamonds.

• He was nearly killed by an angry mob when he first used his mutant power to destroy a falling crane.

• And he was nearly forced into a life of crime by Jack O'Diamonds until he was rescued by Professor Charles Xavier and became the first member of the X-Men.
