Psychiatrist Jonathan Crane was a meek, timid man who delighted in the fear of other people. Teaching classes at Gotham University, Crane would constantly scare his class to enjoy their reactions. Eventually he went too far and was fired by the school. That's when Crane's mind finally snapped, and he adopted the identity of the Scarecrow to continue his murderous experiments of fear.
